Matthew E. Larkum

“Our everyday life is constantly improved by new scientific discoveries and inventions. This is especially true when it comes to biomedical research, which aims to find new treatments to improve human health. Scientific research thus unites us towards this global humanitarian goal. I believe that ‘The Science Bridge’ initiative will make the best use of collaborative scientific research to bring all cultures and nations closer together for peaceful coexistence.”

Matthew E. Larkum received his B.A. in Physiology at the University of Sydney and his Ph.D. at the University of Bern, Switzerland. After completing his postdoctoral research training with a Nobel Laureate, Bert Sakmann, at the Max Planck Institute in Heidelberg, he became a Professor at the Institute for Physiology of the University of Bern. In 2011, he became a Professor at the Humboldt University in Berlin and head a lab at the Charité-Universitätsmedizin, NeuroCure Cluster of Excellence. His research interest is to understand how dendritic compartments integrate sensory signals in neurons and to reveal the mechanisms of feed-forward/feedback interactions in the cortical network.
